Debbie Johnson “Letters” 45 Years Later

Bishop Ward LetterAt the 45th Reunion Dinner on Saturday, September 12,  on behalf of the class of 1970, Tom Roberts and Mike Harris surprised Debbie Johnson (pictured below) and awarded her with an official Ward varsity letter “W.”  The letter was presented in recognition of her numerous contributions and hard work on all of our reunions, as well as all of the communications efforts she manages. As many know, earlier this year Debbie took it upon herself to launch a website for the class, the only class to have one! And she does a monthly newsletter, keeps track of our database including birthdays and more.

The recognition of the varsity letter was endorsed by Ward itself who provided the official letter, and who agreed that Debbie had more than earned it. It was beautifully framed in a shadow box with a plaque which reads: “Presented to Debbie Johnson from the Class of 1970, Bishop Ward High School, with our appreciation at our 45th Class Reunion.” Debbie was totally surprised, very honored and very humbled by the recognition and it’s now one of her “prized” possessions.

Message from Bill Burns

Nancy and I have been married 40 blissful years on July 19th

I was thinking I really wanted to do something special for her and decided I will take her to a really special place in my heart that she will really enjoy and remember. Now remember it’s a surprise…..

Nancy1I am going to take her for a weekend to Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri for the opening day of the 2015 K.C. Chiefs summer camp. The day will begin at Quick Trip for some hot coffee on our way to the “special place.”

Our first stop will be at Union Station in Kansas City to visit the Pro Football Hall of Fame “Gridiron Glory” and visit the exhibit. After seeing the exhibit, I will take Nancy to Town Topic on S.W. Blvd. before heading out. After lunch, we will begin driving north for about an hour or so. I made motel reservations at Super 8 for the night in St. Joe, Missouri.

Nancy2After a night of tickle tickle we will get up early to make the K.C. Chiefs opening day of summer camp which begins at 8:15 am and will run approximately two hours and 40 minutes. After practice I will let Nancy stay to get autographs of her favorite Chiefs players. Being so close to the players, there’s nothing like it. They’re such a good team, players coming over and talking to fans and engaging and signing autographs, Nancy will probably pee her pants. Those are things she doesn’t get on game day at the stadium.

This wedding anniversary will be one she will never forget! I wanted to share my excitement with all of you because it took a lot of thinking and thought process to come up with this very special 40th wedding anniversary surprise for Nancy!

Do You Remember?

This month, it will be 45 years since the Class of 1970 performed “Hello Dolly.” (It was scheduled on April 27, 28 and May 1 and 2.) The movie with Barbra Streisand had just come out the year before in 1969, and it was very timely of us to perform this show. It was fantastic!

Alumni Travel to Germany, Croatia and Italy

Germany Travel GroupA group of 21 Bishop Ward High School alumni traversed through Munich, Germany; Dubrovnik, Croatia; Venice, Florence and finally, visited the original “City of Fountains,” Rome. This trip was part of the Sister City Trips that visits the countries of Kansas City, Kansas sister cities.

The group flew into Munich, Germany and from there went to Dubrovnik, Croatia. Dubrovnik is a small medieval city on the Adriatic Sea. The group visited the city because of Kansas City’s ties to Croatia and Croatian culture. Read more ›
